Submission Guidelines

While the series ‘Cultural Inquiry’ is closely connected to the ICI Berlin Institute for Cultural Inquiry, proposals for books (monographs or edited volumes) fitting the series profile are welcome from all sources. The ICI Berlin has an annual budget to contribute to the production costs that the publisher charges depending on the volume’s size and other details. Preference both for inclusion in the series and for publication grants is given to publications

  • closely related to the current ICI Core Project and Focus
  • resulting from collaborative work carried out at the ICI Berlin and/or emerging from events or projects previously supported by the ICI Berlin
  • from fellows, alumni, and other individuals associated with the ICI Berlin

Authors or editors wishing to present a book proposal should write to the series editors at ci.editors(at) with a brief prospectus including a description of the work and its intended audience, expected length and number of illustrations, and information on the schedule for completion of the manuscript. The proposal should also include a curriculum vitae, table of contents, and a sample chapter. If the book is a collection of essays, please indicate clearly who the contributors will be, and include their abstracts as well as a preliminary version of the introduction.

If we think that we can include the proposed book in the series, we would exchange provisional acceptance letters with the author(s)/editor(s) to establish the terms of publication, and what obligations each party will have. While we would expect this to lead to a successful outcome, we will offer a formal contract only once we have seen a substantially complete (though not necessarily final) manuscript.

Decisions on funding are taken twice a year in the spring and autumn. The respective deadlines for submitting proposals are 28 February and 30 September. Proposals indicating that they do not depend on receiving an ICI Publication Grant can be submitted at any time and will be reviewed throughout the year.

For publications to appear in the autumn/spring, the finished manuscripts must be handed in by the preceding 28 February/30 September, respectively.
